Why travel health planning matters

Africa is one of the most medically diverse destinations in the world. Climate differences, regional disease patterns, and varied levels of medical infrastructure mean preparation is essential—especially if your trip includes rural areas, wildlife reserves, or multiple countries. This includes understanding risks such as:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and yellow fever
  • Food and water exposure, which can increase the chances of typhoid or hepatitis A
  • Outdoor and safari activities, which require additional protection and planning

Entry requirements, which vary from country to country

With proper guidance, most travel-related illnesses can be prevented. Planning ahead ensures that your experience remains focused on exploration—not health concerns.

Recommended & required vaccines

Because Africa’s health risks vary by region, no two travelers receive the exact same recommendations. Below are the most commonly advised vaccines and medications for trips across the continent:

Yellow Fever (Required for many destinations)

Because Africa’s health risks vary by region, no two travelers receive the exact same recommendations. Below are the most commonly advised vaccines and medications for trips across the continent:

Malaria Prevention Medication

While there is no vaccine for malaria, prescription antimalarial medication is essential for travel across much of Africa. The right medication depends on your itinerary, health history, and trip length.

Typhoid

Recommended for most travelers, especially if visiting smaller towns, rural areas, or staying with family or local communities.

Hepatitis A & B

Hepatitis A is widely recommended due to food and water exposure risks.
Hepatitis B is recommended for longer trips, medical missions, or any travel where unplanned medical care might occur.
